この曲集は、プログラミング言語「ドリトル」で書かれたプログラムにより自動作曲されたものです。144のバリエーションは、194612×N（バリエーション番号）により計算される乱数の種を元にして生成されました。
曲は二つの声部で構成されています。各パートは、二分の一小節ずれているだけで同じ旋律です。各旋律は、最初から演奏しても最後から演奏しても同じになる回文的な構造になっています。曲は全て32小節になっているので、1～16小節と17～32小節が、ちょうど鏡に映し出したように対称になります。
曲のテンポは、48,64,80,96,112,128 の中からランダムに決定されました。音符の音の長さは、2,4,8,16 分音符で構成される音符セットの中からランダムに選ばれたものです。
音の高さは、O3G～O5Eの範囲でランダムに生成されています。従って、調性が無い12音階的なメロディになっています。曲集は、ピアノなどの鍵盤楽器や木琴などで実際に演奏できます。音域がクラリネットで演奏できる範囲になっているので、クラリネットでも演奏が可能だと思います。
左右対称の同じメロディーが二分の一小節ずれているだけなのですが、実際に演奏してみると、各パートの音が微妙に絡み合って複雑な音のパターンが出現します。プログラムにより自動作曲された実験的な音楽の世界を、ぜひ楽しんでみてください。
